Where you can go is always dependent on where you started.
Our church has seen many changes over its 125 year history. Each time a major shift occurs we seek to respond the best way we know how; by asking where is God leading us next, and how do we get there together.
The first 75 Years
Piney Grove was organized on August 8, 1899, with ten charter members. Under the leadership of founding Pastor, Rev. Columbus Stone The first church building was constructed partly from boards salvaged from the Macedonia Methodist Church. In August of 1903 Piney Grove was one of the 20 original churches forming the Surry Baptist Association. Over its formative years leaders knew how important and beneficial educational opportunities were to members of the community and in February 1932 year-round Sunday School began. Church preaching services were held on Saturday night and Sunday morning once a month.
In March of 1936 the Piney Grove school building and property were purchased by the church and after continued growth the congregation commissioned 15 members to organize Blues Grove Baptist Church.
After continued growth to both the congregation and the community the church moved into its newly completed building in 1940. The 1940’s brought many technological advances to the community and electricity and heat were added to the buildings and a new Sunday school wing was built.
The 1950’s saw faith formation program growth as the first Mission and outreach programs began, the Women of the congregation formed the first Women’s Missionary Union, and the Children’s programs of Royal Ambassadors and Girls in Action made their way to the life of the church.
In the 1960’s were a period of expansion. Additional land was purchased for cemetery inclusion, a church Parsonage was built and the formal church constitution was drawn up and adopted. The business of the church was formalized with the creation of the leadership teams. The Diaconate (care and servant leaders) the finance team (business committee), Personnel Team (Human Relations) and Mission Team (service and outreach) were organized by a committee, the church initiated the practice of budgeting and operations on a yearly schedule.
Recognizing a growing need and demographic the church youth were formally organized in 1972. For the past 52 years students grade 6-12 have held activities one night per week, gathered together for camps and mission trips, enjoyed retreats and hold an annual youth Sunday, in addition to their various leadership positions in the everyday life of the congregation.
Throughout the 1970’s, seeing a continued growth and need for space the church voted to accept building plans for a new church building. Formal ground breaking services were held in March 1973 and the first worship service took place in the new sanctuary in November 1974.
